A Brooklyn assemblyman is trying to ease the financial burden of some Hurricane Sandy victims.

William Colton wants Governor Andrew Cuomo to require the New York Department of Motor Vehicles to waive new registration and plate-transfer fees for drivers who lost their cars during the storm.

According to Colton, families that lost more than one car often pay $200 or $300 in fees.

"The transfer fees, even if they can recover the plates, they have to return them," Colton said. "The new registration on the car, and remember when you buy a new car, very often the dealer will charge a fee in order to get the plates, a service charge in order to get the new registration and the paperwork with the DMV."

The assemblyman also wants the DMV to refund drivers if they already paid the fees to replace their vehicles.

An estimated 200,000 cars were lost to the storm in the New York area.

The DMV is currently waiving the fee to replace registrations and license plates if they were lost due to Hurricane Sandy, which can add up to $28.
