A disabled coop owner and his disabled neighbor are trapped in their East Harlem apartment due to a broken elevator that has no timetable for repair. NY1's Susan Jhun filed this NY1 For You report.
For the past three weeks, Lionel Washington has been home bound because of a broken elevator.
"I haven't been able to attend the doctors," he said. "I haven't been able to do anything that's beneficial for me."
It's impossible for Washington, a disabled coop owner, to walk up and down the six flights to his apartment. And with the only elevator in his building broken, Washington and his roommate, Marie Mack, who is also disabled, are trapped.
"It's just been so hard," Mack said. "So hard."
The coop owner approached the building's board about fixing the elevator but says he got no real answer as to when it will run again.
NY1 called the head of the coop board but have yet to hear back. The station also called the New York City Department of Buildings to see what, if anything, the agency can do.
