Metro North and Long Island Railroad will be the first to see the increase, while the fare hike will go into effect for subway and bus riders Sunday.

The base fare for them is going up from $2.25 to $2.50.

The 30-day unlimited ride Metro Card will cost $112, up from $104.

The 7-day unlimited cards will be $30.

Commuter rail tickets will increase between 8.2 and 9.3 percent.

Some tunnel and bridge tolls are also increasing.

"It's not something I can control. So, yeah, it makes me mad as hell but what the hell am I supposed to do about it," said one LIRR commuter.

"It's a perpetual issue, you know, it doesn't matter what system it is, your food or your transportation, costs of anything, everything just perpetually goes up, but your income doesn't go up the same, so that's where the frustration comes," said another commuter.

"We don't have any other choice than to take public transportation," noted a third commuter.

Another fee for commuters to think about: A dollar will now be charged for each new MetroCard purchased, though riders can return an expired or damaged card and get a new one for free.
