Residents without public transportation in the Rockaways will soon have several alternatives to get to and from the peninsula.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that A train service will be extended to the Howard Beach station beginning Sunday at 8 a.m. Shuttle buses will then run between Howard Beach and Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway.

The shuttle bus service is needed because significant damage was done to subway infrastructure through Broad Channel, as well as to the North Channel Bridge. MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said in a statement Friday that "restoring the entire A train will take months."

In addition, Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday announced a joint effort to provide ferry service to residents traveling into and out of the heavily damaged Rockaways.

The mayor says the Seastreak company will run boats beginning Monday.

The ferries will run on a rush hour schedule between 5:45 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. to 6:55 p.m.

Fares are set at $2 each way.

The ferries will launch from Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive to Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan with free transfers between Pier 11 and East 34th Street in Midtown.

Officials say it's important to bring a sense of normalcy to those hardest hit.

The ferry service is necessary because the tracks that carry the A train across Jamaica Bay were heavily damaged.

There has not been a Rockaway ferry since 2010.

There will also be a free ferry service for those who need to get from New Jersey to the city.

They will run from Liberty State Park in Jersey City to Battery Park and from Weehawken to Pier 79 at West 39th Street in Midtown.

The service will run weekdays between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. inbound and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. outbound.

Free shuttle buses are available to and from parts of New Jersey. For more information visit NJTransit.com.
