Audit: Port Authority Toll Increases Necessary To Fund Projects

An audit released Wednesday says last year's Port Authority toll increases were necessary to fund critical transportation projects and they must raise them again.
The independent audit was ordered by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Gov. Chris Christie as a condition of toll increases they approved last year. The increases impact several busy spots, including the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.
"It's important for everyone to understand that every dollar of our toll and fare revenue goes toward the agency's interstate transportation network," said Port Authority Chairman David Samson. "And even with the toll increase, the transportation network will operate at a negative cash flow."
The Port Authority is also appealing a judge's decision to release a study reportedly showing toll hikes are, in part, responsible for lost business at the New York Container Terminal on Staten Island.
