Sen. Charles Schumer took a look at the damage Hurricane Sandy caused at Coney Island Hospital.

Schumer was given a tour by Health and Hospitals Corporation President Alan Aviles and hospital officials.

The hospital suffered extensive water and systems damage and had to evacuate 200 patients.

Schumer says he knows the hospital well, since he represented the area as an Assemblyman, Congressman and Senator, and his mother-in-law was a clerical worker at the hospital for 30 years.

"This is such a huge institution, and it wasn't that one part of it was hurt, the whole thing was hurt," Schumer said. "The breadth of it is just astounding -- how big the job is to rebuild, to get everything back."

Aviles says the impact of the hurricane on the city's public hospital system will exceed $800 million, most of which will go for repair and restoration at Coney Island Hospital and Bellevue.
