Crews Contain Oil, Cement Spill In Brooklyn Waterway

The U.S. Coast Guard continues to oversee a major cleanup effort in a Brooklyn waterway following an oil and chemical spill last week.
Officials say about 1,100 gallons of a mixture of cement and petroleum were spilled early Friday in Paerdegat Basin, which connects to Jamaica Bay.
Officials said the spill started when crews from the utility National Grid were cementing a pipe.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the source of the spill has been secured and containment booms have been put in place.
Members of the nearby Midget Squadron Yacht Club say they are worried about the safety of the local wildlife and their vessels.
"The smell was just nauseating, I actually had to leave the club it was so bad," said one boat owner.
"The concerns are for the boats that are in the water, the concern to the docks because the docks are made out of Styrofoam and the Styrofoam with any type of oil base will break down the Styrofoam and cause the docks to sink," said Midget Squadron Yacht Club Commodore Russell Warren.
New Yorkers were advised on Sunday to avoid fishing and recreational activity in the area while the cleanup was ongoing.
