If watching beach volleyball at the Olympics has piqued your interest in the sport, you can learn the finer points of the game at some free clinics in Brooklyn. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report. At Brooklyn Bridge Park, kids and adults can take part in free volleyball clinics three days a week during the summer months.
"The Olympics has increased the interest in Beach Volleyball, which is great. We want to get the kids involved as young as possible so they'll stick with us and eventually join leagues and stuff and love the sport," said Keith Miller of Metro Beach Sports.
There are also free volleyball clinics for camps and afterschool programs around the city.
A portion of the fees from leagues and tournaments at Pier 6 help keep the clinics free.
"We use a lot of positive reinforcement, we get the kids down here, and teach them the bump, set, there's a lot of teamwork that goes into playing volleyball, and they do a great job," said Dave Walker of Big City Volleyball.
"We try to basically take these wonderful courts and sort of maximize their use across a variety of different users from the novice to the more serious player," said Nancy Webster of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy.
During NY1's visit to the courts Tuesday, Instructor Adam Delgado offered up some tips for those who have trouble returning serves. First rule: Don't catch the ball. Delgado says it doesn't take too long to figure the whole thing out.
"It's not a hard game at all to learn. It's pretty simple, and the highlight of my day is I want to make it fun for somebody to learn," said Delgado.
