A woman and a child remain hospitalized after they were struck by a gate outside of 5th Avenue Cat Clinic in Park Slope Thursday.

Fire officials said the incident occurred at the corner of President Street and Fifth Avenue around 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

A spokesperson for the New York City Department of Buildings said a weld on a rolling-down gate failed, which caused the gate to fall on the mother and child.

The DOB spokesperson said they believed the gate fell as a result of poor maintenance.

A violation against 4G Realty LLC, the company that manages the property, was issued, according to the DOB spokesperson.

"All of a sudden, out of nowhere, the roll-up gate just come flying off so unnaturally, like woo. That was it," said one witness. "And the poor woman got cracked on the head, split opened. And then the child must have got caught under after she went down, and the gate must have grabbed the child's leg, and then all you know she's laying on the floor, blood gushing from her head."

The woman is in serious condition with a head injury and the child suffered a leg injury and was also hospitalized.

The woman was the child's nanny and was not related to the child. Witnesses said the woman was asking for bystanders to call the child's mother after the accident.

5th Avenue Cat Clinic refused to answer NY1's questions both at the store location and by phone.
