Seven schools were added to the Department of Education’s closure list Friday, bringing the total number to 19.

Washington Irving High School in Manhattan is one of the three high schools, two middle schools, and two elementary schools added to the closure list. It’s also one of two schools that just started a three-year federal program that uses millions of dollars to try to turn schools around, but education officials say they no longer believe they can be saved.

The additions came after 12 schools were placed on the list Thursday.

The schools will generally be "phased out," allowing current students to graduate before the programs are replaced with new schools, new teachers, and a new principal.

On Friday, the DOE also added three more schools to the list that will lose middle school classes, bringing that number to six.

Eleven of the 25 schools slated for closure or truncation were opened under Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"We have a responsibility to aggressively look at these schools and make very difficult choices in terms of phasing them out, truncating grades and the creation of new schools that will be put in their place," said Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott.

The head of the teacher's union has called the closures another stunning failure of education department management.

Last year, the Panel for Educational Policy voted to close 27 schools, the most in a single year.
