A school bus driver was injured Monday morning after a collision sent the bus they were driving into a Brooklyn day care.

The New York City Fire Department says the bus and an SUV collided at the intersection of Rockaway Parkway and Avenue N in Canarsie around 8:20 a.m.

The impact sent the bus up onto the sidewalk, through an iron and brick fence, and came to rest in front of Little Andy's Day Care.

A small fire also broke out on the bus following the collision.

No children were on board at the time.

Witnesses say the SUV ran a red light before hitting the bus.

"A lot of flames in the front which I assume was from the gas tank. I heard an explosion. Flames kept moving back and it exploded another time," said one witness. "Some civilians took some bricks from the fence to break the back window to open up the back door of the bus and we were checking underneath to see if there were any kids. No kids."

"I thought it was an earthquake, I jumped up. I just looked out and saw the bus on fire. I had to climb through my window because I thought it was about to explode and blow up my house too," said another.

The daycare manager says four children who were inside at the time were unharmed and were safely evacuated out of the back of the building.

The driver of the school bus was taken to Brookdale Hospital.

The cause of the collision was still under investigation on Monday.
