Bob Turner, the Republican candidate for Anthony Weiner’s old seat in the 9th Congressional District, gathered with supporters in Forest Hills Monday for a final bit of campaigning before residents take to the polls tomorrow, and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani was present to lend some strong words of encouragement. NY1’s Grace Rauh filed the following report.Republican Bob Turner wound down his campaign for Congress outside of the train station in Forest Hills Monday, bringing it all back to where it started.
“We have a job to do. We're going to get that vote out. We are going to win,” said Turner.
Two months ago, Turner began what appeared to be an uphill battle. He was running as a Republican in a heavily Democratic district and trying to claim a seat that has been in Democratic hands since 1923.
However, just before a special election to replace Anthony Weiner, Turner seems poised to potentially pull off an upset. Big-name Republicans like former Mayor Rudy Giuliani are taking notice.
“We need to send somebody to Washington who is going to send a message to President Obama that we've got to come up with a new plan,” said Giuliani.
Giuliani stumped with Turner on his last full day of campaigning before voters go to the polls. The former mayor also took aim at Turner's rival, Democrat David Weprin.
“This is a career Democratic, party-line politician. This is another vote for Nancy Pelosi. This is another vote for Barack Obama probably 90 percent of the time,” said Giuliani.
The race could turn into a referendum on the White House's position on Israel and the state of the economy.
As for Election Day, Turner's opponent is relying on a union-backed get out the vote effort. Giuliani said Turner will benefit from something else entirely.
“The enthusiasm and the emotion is on Bob's side. The machine politics is on the other side,” said Giuliani.
Turner supporters are fired up.
“This country is going in the wrong direction and that's why a lot of us, Democrat, Republican, Independent, are coming out for Bob Turner. Because they've had enough, and this is a message to say we want a real change,” said one supporter.
The question is whether enough voters feel the same way and are willing to head to the polls on Tuesday.
