In the special congressional race to succeed Anthony Weiner, Democrat David Weprin picked up the endorsement of Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman.
Lieberman, a Democrat turned Independent, says Weprin will help unite Washington during a time of extreme partisanship.
"The American people see Democrats and Republicans fighting each other instead of fighting for the people. David knows better than that," said Lieberman. "And as a member of Congress, I'm convinced that he will do a lot better than that."
Weprin is facing Republican candidate Bob Turner in a special election scheduled for September 13.
Some of Turner's supporters, including former Mayor Ed Koch, have tried to make President Barack Obama's stance on Israel an issue in the race.
Lieberman was the first major-party vice-presidential nominee who was Jewish.
