One section of Brooklyn is getting a new, free Wi-Fi network.

Known as "DUMBO Wi-Fi," it will provide wireless access between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.

The project is meant to support growth in the district, especially among digital and creative firms, and will be available everywhere from streets to public parks and plazas.

It is the first time an entire area of the city is being blanketed with this service.

"Maybe my age, we don't fully understand this, but for younger people, it's central in their lives," said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. "Now they'll be able to come to DUMBO, enjoy our restaurants and cafes, go to the arts scene, we have a lot of art studios here. And then at their pace, whenever they want, they can flip open their devices, whatever it is, and bingo -- wireless, here I am."

The network comes thanks to a collaboration between the neighborhood improvement district and a developer, and is being installed by a nonprofit group.
