City officials gathered in Coney Island earlier today to celebrate the opening of the newest Coney Island amusement park.

Known as "Scream Zone," the $12 million attraction features the first new roller coaster the boardwalk has seen since 1927.

Other attractions include "The Sling Shot," which launches riders more than 150 feet into the air at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour, and the 100-foot-tall "Zenobio," which sends riders through the air at speeds of over 60 miles per hour.

"You can get here by subway, you can get here by driving, taking a taxi, riding a bicycle. It's close and it's fun. And each day is different and it's part of New York. It's part of New York's heritage, New York's history," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"I will go on that sling shot ride, right over there, provided that the mayor ponies up thousands of hundred dollar bills high up so that it will soften my fall," joked Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

The rides cost between $7 and $20.

"Scream Zone" will officially open to the public on Friday and will operate on weekends through Memorial Day. After that, it will be open to thrill seekers seven days a week.
