Family and friends paid their final respects Sunday to the woman killed in last weekend's five-alarm fire in Brooklyn.
A funeral was held for Mary Feagin, 64, in Prospect Heights.
The city medical examiner says she died of smoke inhalation.
"She had a good heart. She loved people you know. She loved helping people. She loved doing for people. She loved life," said Gregory Feagin, the victim's brother-in-law.
The longtime building resident and president of the tenants association had just retired in December. She had worked as a special needs teacher at P.S. 363.
“That’s the thing that hurts. She was deserving of that time,” said Feagin’s nephew Vincent Hill. “She worked so hard. She was ready to go ahead and enjoy a full retirement.”
Fire marshals blame last Saturday's fire at 346 East 29th Street on a voodoo ritual involving candles.
They say the fire quickly spread because the occupants didn't call 911 right away and an open door let in strong winds.
Twenty firefighters and six tenants were injured.
The community is helping the more than 100 people left homeless.
City Councilman Jumaane Williams and Borough President Marty Markowitz held a donation drive in Flatbush on Saturday, collecting clothing, toys, food, and other necessities.
Organizers say more help is still needed.
Donations can be brought to St. Stephen's Lutheran Church on Newkirk Avenue, Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m.
