Some New Yorkers say they are tired of diesel fumes coming from the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

Community leaders are calling on the government and cruise ship companies to come to an agreement on using "shore power" technology.

Shore power technology would allow the ships to plug into the electrical grid at the port while docked, eliminating the need to run on fuel.

"We can smell that diesel wafting over the neighborhood. Every week, sometimes multiple times a week the ships come in and those diesel fumes waft over," said State Senator Daniel Squadron.

"It's an issue of health. It's an issue of cleaner environment. But it is also an issue of fairness in terms of environmental justice," said State Senator Velmanette Montgomery.

Lawmakers say the city, Port Authority, power authority and cruise ship lines have yet to come to an agreement on the maintenance and operating costs of the project.

A spokesperson for Cunard Cruises says the company hopes to utilize shore power within the next year.
