Thursday marks the 50th anniversary of the deadly midair collision of two airliners above the city.
The 1960 crash of a United jet and a TWA propeller plane killed 134 people, including six on the ground, making it the worst aviation disaster at the time.
The United jet crashed into a busy commercial strip in Brooklyn, destroying 10 buildings, while the other plane crashed into a military air base on Staten Island.
The crash was the first where investigators heavily used black boxes and spurred a revamping of the air control system to prevent future tragedies.
