About a hundred Brooklyn residents spoke out Monday night against a plan to build a homeless shelter in their neighborhood.
A town hall meeting was held at the Polish Slavic Center to talk about the 200-bed men's shelter proposed for Greenpoint.
It would be housed in an industrial building on McGuinness Boulevard near Clay Street.
Many residents say busing in homeless men from across the city to a shelter in Greenpoint would hurt their neighborhood.
"We already have the waste treatment plant, the Superfund site right up the street. There's already [a Single Room Occupancy facility], right near in that neighborhood, so a 200 bed homeless shelter just seems pretty unfair,” said Greenpoint resident Lauren Adams.
“We have a hotel already over here for the homeless. We're trying to improve the neighborhood, not make it worse. It's improving, but somebody else that doesn't live in the area keep bringing in stuff that don't belong here,” said Greenpoint resident Mike Benitez.
The Department of Homeless Services says it is reviewing HELP USA's proposal to build the shelter so it cannot comment at this time.
A DHS spokeswoman said, "Homeless Services strives to be a good neighbor and has been working closely with the surrounding community, while providing shelter to all those in need."
City Councilman Steve Levin said the DHS is not working with the community and the shelter is the last thing the neighborhood needs.
"We will make sure that the folks in City Hall know that this community is not going to stand for this kind of shelter in this neighborhood," said Levin.
On Monday, HELP USA officials said they would not comment until the DHS acts on their proposal to run this shelter.
HELP USA is a non-profit group providing housing and supportive services for the homeless. Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo's sister sits on the group's board of directors.
