Dozens of volunteers in Brooklyn rolled up their sleeves Wednesday to help those in need.

The group was up early in Williamsburg, filling emergency food packages for Citymeals on Wheels.

The 30-pound boxes will go to elderly and disabled residents who receive daily Meals on Wheels deliveries. Crackers, rice bowls, canned vegetables and other items will ensure that in the event of a winter emergency like a blizzard or blackout, no one will go without food.

"It's important number one because they have the food, and number two because they think that somebody out there is making sure that they're going to be okay and is taking care of them and remembers them,” said Rachel Sherrow of Citymeals on Wheels. "These clients are, most of them live alone. Most of them have suffered a lot of losses."

The emergency packages will be delivered to more than 15,000 homes throughout November.
