NY1 VIDEO: Tennis courts are getting renovated in McCarren Park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, courtesy of the "Fresh Courts" program.

The effort, sponsored by American Express and the United States Tennis Association, is investing in developing American communities by resurfacing and renovating tennis facilities in disrepair.

"This community really is tennis crazy, so we've got the McCarren Tennis Association who cares a lot for the programming here on these courts," says Justin Street of the USTA. "Really what we want to do is tap into that love of tennis that's right here in this neighborhood."

"There's a stereotype that tennis is an elitist sport. But when you come back here in a week and you see older Polish people and young Latinos and hipsters all side by side, whacking balls around in McCarren tennis courts, it's tremendous," says City Parks Administrator Stephanie Thayer.

When the work is complete, there will be six full-sized courts and two smaller courts for children in the Brooklyn park.
