Crews are making progress cleaning up the Gowanus Canal.

They're preparing to shut down and upgrade the mile-long pipe system that circulates water in and out of the canal.

The upgrades are expected to take 26 months.

On Monday, crews installed a temporary system that will perform some of the pipe's functions -- a feat the Department of Environmental Protection says is a key step in the cleanup process.

"At the end of the day, when the project is completed a few years from now, we will have lower volumes of combined sewer overflows in the canal, less floatable debris and higher oxygen levels in the canal," said DEP representative Carter Strickland.

The pipe system is part of a $140 million effort aimed at turning the canal into a waterway for recreational use.
