Four city firefighters suffered minor injuries Thursday while fighting a three-alarm fire at the historic Baptist Temple Church in Boerum Hill.

The fire broke out at midnight and was brought under control by 140 firefighters at around 1:30 a.m.

"We had the organ collapse on firefighters. They were trapped for five to 10 minutes. So we were concerned about their well-being. I feel overwhelmed," said Raymond Ramos, the church's pastor.

Ramos said there were still people inside when the fire started.

"We had a Bible study going on, during the Bible study, they're already closing prayer. They hear the alarm going off, they go upstairs, they see flames, everybody exits the building," said Ramos. "They do a run-around, make sure everyone is out of the building, they call the fire department and everybody is safe."

The church was built in the 1890s and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 for its architectural and engineering significance.

Now, most of the upper part of the sanctuary is ruined as fire ripped through the walls and the balcony. Parishioners said they will rebuild.

"There's a lot of work to be done in there. There's a lot of damage," said church deacon Glenn Davis. "We can do it. The Lord's going to help us, help provide for us. We're going to recover from this."

In addition to being a church, the location serves as a food pantry and offers recovery services for those dealing with drug and alcohol addiction.

"They help a lot of people with recovery, they got a food pantry," said church member Eddie Rosa. "You meet a lot of good people in there."

Church officials say all services will be cancelled until a temporary location can be found. Members say it is unfortunate, because the church has become a community center.

"We had a big function here on the Fourth of July," said church member Shirley Ortiz. "It was all free, we fed a lot of the neighborhood. We sang and worshipped God. It's just a multicultural, multi-tasking church and there are a lot of great people behind here and they don't ask nothing from nobody."

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
