Police are searching for whoever fatally shot a Brooklyn teen last night.

According to police, Al-Taya Conyers, 16, was shot one time in the head outside a Methodist Church on Warren Street in Boerum Hill.

When police arrived just before midnight, she was transported to Long Island College Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Neighbors say they heard between four and eight gunshots.

Police sources say a man wearing a red shirt was seen running away from the scene.

Conyers lived in the Wyckoff Garden Houses, about a block away from where she was killed.

"It just broke my heart, like wow," said friend Jasmine Berry. "She's such a nice person, you wouldn't hear this about her.

"She was so respectful to her elders,” said friend Rahim Leigh. “A nice, sweet young girl, to die at a young age, she didn't get to live her life."

Conyers was described as someone who loved kids and often volunteered as a babysitter.

"She would get my daughter, take her to the park without me asking,” said Alston, who had Conyers babysit his two-year-old daughter. “It's crazy. I can't believe it."

Still, sources tell NY1 there was a dark side to Conyers life.

Her ex-boyfriend, the sources say, was arrested three times on charges he assaulted her. And, these sources tell NY1 Conyers herself was arrested two days ago on charges she sent threatening Twitter messages to another girl.

Police want to speak to her ex-boyfriend, but are not calling him a suspect.

Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS, by texting TIP577 to CRIMES, or by going to NYPDCrimeStoppers.com.
