A former brewery in Brooklyn was officially recognized Tuesday by the city's Landmark Preservation Commission.

The William Ulmer Brewery Complex in Bushwick is the first lager plant in the city to be named a landmark.

The four-building complex was constructed between 1872 and 1890.

It was one of 45 breweries in the borough by the late 19th century.

At its peak it made more than three million gallons of beer a year.

The Ulmer plant shut its doors after Prohibition in 1920.
