Dozens of Polish-Americans gathered Sunday at the Polish and Slavic Center in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to pay their final respects to President Lech Kaczynski.

About 100 Polish-Americans sat in silence as they watched the live coverage of the state funeral in Krakow.

"I think that it was very powerful, it was very sad. And I was really touched to see how the older people came and that everybody felt that this was the time to be together and seethe mass, " said one Greenpoint resident.

"I'm lots of times even crying now because that's my president, even if I live here in the United States 30 years my heart also belongs to Poland, " said another.

The caskets were carried into the 13th-century St. Mary's Basilica for a traditional mass.

Poland's politicians sat shoulder to shoulder with leaders from Russia, Estonia, Lithuania and Ukraine.

The Kaczynski's daughter, Marta, and the president's twin brother sat in the front row.

The bodies of the president and his wife, Maria, were later carried through the streets pulled by army humvees in a military precession.

Poles lined the route waving Polish flags, clapping and chanting "Lech Kaczynski. We thank you!''

The procession ended at Warwel Cathedral, where the first couple will be laid to rest.

Their crypt will be open to mourners after the ceremonies.

Polish police estimated the number of mourners in and around Krakow at nearly 150,000.

The Polish president and his wife were among 96 people killed in last weekend's plane crash in Smolensk, Russia.

Russian investigators have said that the flight recorder data revealed that the plane's pilot was warned to land elsewhere due to heavy fog conditions.
