Police are searching for the driver of a car that fled the scene after hitting two pedestrians in Brooklyn early Sunday morning. NY1's Erica Ferrari filed the following report.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday when police say a 1993 green Acura struck 22-year-old Erinn Phelan and her friend 23-year-old Alma Guerrero as they were crossing Flatbush Avenue near Prospect Place.

"I just saw the cops everywhere and Flatbush was blocked," said one Prospect Heights resident.

Phelan, who had a promising career working for Mayor Michael Bloomberg heading the NYC Civic Corps reportedly has been declared brain dead by doctors. Guerrero is in stable condition.

Bloomberg visited Phelan and her family at Kings County Hospital Sunday night.

After the visit, he released a statement saying:

"When I spoke to Erinn's parents earlier today, I told them that as a father I can't begin to imagine what they are going through, but all of our prayers are with their dedicated and idealistic young daughter who's helping New York City answer President Obama's historic call to service."

Police say they found the car that hit them abandoned with a smashed windshield just a few blocks away, but are still searching for the driver.

Residents say vehicles are constantly speeding down Flatbush Avenue, particularly where the hit and run took place.

"Cars go pretty fast, they tear through here. Especially during rush hour," said one Prospect Heights resident.

Three months ago, a 38-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car on Flatbush Avenue, just one block from the scene of Sunday's hit-and-run.

"There's a lot of foot traffic and a lot of car traffic so there's going to be more accidents. It's a very family-oriented neighborhood and then also combined with a heavy traffic street such as Flatbush Avenue," said one Prospect Heights resident.
