New York City is getting a new area code.

Area code 929 will be assigned to the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, parts of the city that now use 718 and 347 area codes.

The dialing pattern is already activated in the area, but existing telephone numbers with the old area codes will not change.

The 929 code will be slowly integrated to minimize confusion and service disruptions for customers.

Some New Yorkers, however, are not so keen on the new change.

"I'm still trying to figure out why we have land lines with 646, I'm upset about that too. We need structure," said one New Yorker.

"You running out of numbers, you running out of tokens, you running out of subways, you running out of jobs," said another New Yorker. "What's next? My wife is gonna run out on me? The dogs gonna ran away?"

Service providers will begin customer education mid-year to prepare for the new code.

The new area code is being introduced because 718 and 347 area codes are expected to exhaust by 2012.
