Grassroots group Save Coney Island filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging the city's plan to rezone the seaside amusement area.

The activist group wants to have the rezoning declared illegal.

The suit seeks to block hotel tower construction that the group claims could wipe historic buildings off the map.

The rezoning would leave only a 12-acre strip of land for the famed amusement district. The plaintiffs claim the Bloomberg administration's plan violates the State Environmental Quality Review Act and other relevant laws.

The city law department says it cannot comment on the specifics of the suit, because it has not received it. The department did issue a statement, saying the review process for the revitalization of Coney Island was proper, with extensive input from the community.
