Brooklyn's borough president and business leaders are trying to encourage residents to keep it in the borough this holiday shopping season.
Borough President Marty Markowitz is launching the "Shop Brooklyn" initiative.
It encourages New Yorkers and tourists alike to shop at and support local businesses by offering bonuses for money spent at shops displaying the special logo.
Shop owners say this is the shot in the arm they've been looking for.
"Every dollar you spend in a local independent store puts more money back into the local economy than if you spend it online or in a chain store. And, it also helps to support the uniqueness of our communities," said Greenlight Bookstore Co-owner Jessica Stockton Bagnulo.
"Having a program like this where they have such a wide range to get people to know about our businesses and to reach people -- I think this is a great program," said Brooklyn small business owner LaShunda Davis.
Starting Friday, shoppers can visit ishopBrooklyn.com to view a list of participating stores.
