Charges are pending against a New York State Corrections officer who is accused of fatally striking a pedestrian Tuesday morning in Brooklyn.
Police say at about 5:00 a.m., Damon Padmore, 38, was driving along Flatbush Avenue at St. Marks Place, when he hit a 38-year-old woman who was crossing the street.
The woman, who has not yet been identified, was taken to Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Padmore, a corrections officer at Sing Sing, remained on the scene, but was taken into custody when it was determined he was driving with a suspended license.
Padmore has worked at Sing Sing upstate for 11 years.
His mother Joyce told NY1 her heart goes out to the victim's family, but she is worried about her son.
"I'm sick and I'm trying not to cry and I'm trying not to get a heart attack. That's why my sister and my neighbors are around me. She could tell you about my son," said Joyce Padmore. "I could call my neighbor because I don't want nobody to think I'm lying. That is my bright and shining star."
Corrections department officials say they are looking into the incident.
