Thousands of Starrett City residents can breathe easy as the nation's largest subsidized housing complex will continue getting government money.

Governor David Paterson signed a bill to keep Starrett City in the Mitchell Lama program for 30 years and provide $40 million for the upkeep of the 150-acre complex.

The Brooklyn apartments were in danger of being sold off to a private developer, but earlier this year those negotiations fell apart.

"The management has agreed to have bimonthly meetings with the tenants association so there will really be full opportunity to be part of the leadership to keep this as one of the greatest housing facilities that America has ever seen," Paterson said.

"When we stick together as a people and we have that unity and we know that the cause that we are fighting for is a correct one and we don't give up, this is the type of results we can get," said Assemblywoman Inez Barron.

In a statement, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the bill goes a long way towards fulfilling City Hall's goal to create or preserve affordable housing for half a million people.
