The Call Blog: Anthony Weiner Hits Campaign Trail, Joins Democratic Debate Tonight

By: NY1 News

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

In political scandals, it's all about paying your dues. Voters want to see that the fallen elected official is repentant and has learned his/her lesson and I'm not sure that Weiner has gotten there yet. That being said, his entry is sure to change up the dynamics of the race and it'll be interesting to see the breakdown of the next poll on the mayoral candidates.

A day after announcing his mayoral campaign online, Anthony Weiner made his case on the streets. The former Congressman greeted commuters in Harlem this morning and rode the subway with straphangers. Tonight, he will join his fellow Democrats at a debate in the Bronx for the first time this campaign season.

On the stump this morning, Weiner said he was running for public office after his tweeting scandal because he wants "to get things done" and "solve problems." He added, "I make no apologies for the idea that I am a hard-driving aggressive problem solver for people." What do you say?

How does Anthony Weiner's campaign change the race for City Hall? What question would you ask him at tonight's debate? What issues would you like all the candidates to address more than they are?

Send your thoughts using the link above.

I would consider voting for Anthony Weiner because I was impressed with his work as a congressman on the 9/11 first responders bill. Christine Quinn supported the NYPD spy operations and defends the stop and frisk policy, so i will not support her in the primary. Weiner's scandal is a personal matter that has no bearing on his ability to represent NY'ers

I'm open to Anthony Weiner's mayoral candidacy. True, he was an idiot with that twitter scandal (emphasis there on "twit"). But, he has owned up to it, which takes guts. And, I think he would add needed ideas, and energy on behalf of the middle class here in NY, to the race. I'm willing to look at him with fresh eyes. All these politicians have lied or betrayed the public trust in some way, but at least Weiner's way of doing so was not via legislation which benefited Wall St or the rich--and the latter kind of betrayal is much worse and more permanent.

Betsy

Aside from his strong action on health care, I don't see Weiner as anything like "a hard-driving aggressive problem solver." His sort of nerdy fervor now comes off as weaselly and desperate; I don't trust him to be in an elected position and would never vote for him again.

re: the issues I want to hear more about
I'd like to continue hearing specific, concrete education plans. There is intense school overcrowding in Queens, real estate development is outpacing anything the DOE is doing on the Upper West Side and elsewhere, the Panel for Educational Policy is an infuriating rubber stamp, standardized testing is out of control, struggling schools do not get the support they need, school funding is at an abysmal level, uptown Manhattan has zero G&T programs, public pre-k is extremely limited, too many eggs are being placed in the 'online'learning' / ipads for everyone basket, etc etc..

Manhattan

Let's all go to the Comedy of the Loonies. The only candidate I have an interest in is Lhotta.

For starters he should quit telling lies and quit the race. A real embarrassment to NYC.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DOES THIS THING HAVE NO SHAME!! HELL NO~ I WOULDN'T VOTE FOR HIM IF HE AND HIS WIFE PAID ME!

JV
NR

Why did you move from Queens to Manhattan? Personally, I was too young to have voted for Clinton, but why should New Yorkers set themselves up for four years of sex scandals, when there are at least 5 other great Democrats running for mayor? No second chanes - fool me once....

Kenn
Brooklyn

I think the NY newspapers ought to stop acting like 8th grade boys and stop the never ending play on words about the name Weiner. It's so immature - enough already. Grow up!

WITH MR.WEINER NOW IN THE MIX SPEAKER QUINN HAS HER FIRST REAL OPPONENT. HE IS THE BEST QUALIFIED TO BE MAYOR. WEENIE JOKES ASIDE.

JIMMY
BRONX

Anthony Weiner will always have a liability in his past. He will always be seen as someone who betrayed his wife and his constituency. He will always be seen as a kind of pervert. Sexual impulses and impulsive behaviors don't just disappear. They are character traits that need a lot of work. Someone with impulse control is not a good mayor. These are just what we know of. What else is still in the closet? It is a weakness that will always make him exploitable with all matters related to running this city. Union leaders bargaining for contracts will always be able to use it as leverage. He has lost his credibility.

Michael

Anthony Weiner joining the mayoral race is great. More choices to choose from the pack. He learned his lesson and he deserves a second chance. What I like about Anthony Weiner he is passionate for his work for the community he was always like that when he worked as a congressman in queens. I respect him. Wenier is for the people.

First of all, Governor Cuomo has a lot of nerve judging and scolding New York City voters by saying "shame on us" if we elect Anthony Weiner as mayor when the New York State capital is involved with enormous corruption and scandal under his watch. Maybe he should start realizing that this is what may happen after 12 years of Mayor Bloomberg's dictatorship filled with nothing but lies, corruption and deviousness. More importantly, maybe he should know that a lot of New Yorkers do not want Ms. Quinn as Mayor to continue Mayor Bloomberg's failed policies and to keep his cronies in office. New York City needs a dramatic change.

Governor Cuomo -- If Anthony Weiner keeps Christine Quinn out of the Mayor's office -- kudos to him!

There will be a runoff between Weiner and Quinn , Weiner will get Thompson's and DeBlasio's vote and will win the primary- and ultimately will win the general election.

Chris
Park Slope

A flawed politician? Haven't we been there many, many times?

Prior to the sexting scandal, he was unequivicolly our biggest progressive stalwart. I believe he will fight for the common man in NYC.

RUN ANTHONY RUN! ABQ (Anybody But Quinn).

Mike
Brooklyn

Second chance? "we are a nation of second chances" please we disenfranchise ex-felons everyday, it doesn't matter whether they intend to live productively or not.

K
Harlem

Chris Quinn with her illegal real estate deals, John Lieu's ongoing corruption scandals; in the light of day, Anthony's scandal doesn't look too bad to me. And I don't think he will do it again.

If the election was today, I would vote for Anthony Wiener and will vote for him in the primary and hopefully in November. He was a great congressman.

Lhota called PA cops "mall cops". seventy three of these mall cops were killed in the trade center. I know; I was there.

My question is: The current mayor has refused to negotiate with the teachers union for over four years now, which means they have not gotten a raise in over four years, what would you do vis a vis the teachers contract?

Chris
Staten Island

I would vote for him if he addresses the carriage horse situation like DeBlasio did when he said he'd stop it the first week in office.

Brian
NYC

I think mr.weiner will be better because he has a very good idea about the middle class and I think they shouldn't Jude him for what he did in the pass, everyone makes mistakes, nobody's perfect!

Yahaira

I will not be voting for anthony weiner. With all the scandals happening & after the vito lopez sexual harassment scandal, why would new yorkers want someone that did something just as bad & lied about it after being caught want him as mayor. I dont trust him. Also, in the past I did not agree with his educational plan for public schools or his brushing aside the incident of a 7 year old child that was handcuffed in one of the public schools.

Denise
Harlem

Anthony Weiner may be the best qualified for the position. However, if he wins NYC will become the "laughing stock" of the country; in the same way that Washington DC was given that title when it re-elected Marion Barry.

Seriously? At one time I had enormous respect for Wiener. However, anyone who is arrogant enough to do what he did on Twitter and he think he could get away with it lacks humility and also shows he has little respect for women. Quinn has my vote. End of story!

DeDe

He is simply the best candidate. He definitely has my vote!

Deborah

Does Anthony Weiner take us all for fools? We have become the laughing stock of the country already without him entering NYC politics. He betrayed the public trust and should do an about face and exit this race. I'm insulted.

Steve
Forest Hills

I don't think Anthony Weiner is the first man to go through a mid-life crisis, workout and have a larger-than-usual active sexual life. It's just not abnormal and it's not wrong. It happens with a lot of men. It's a little hurtful to his partner, but I think that's between the people in the relationship.

He's a good politician and has done a lot of progressive things for us here in NYC. I think the Democrats have a lot of very good candidates for the Mayor's Office this Election and I'm glad that Anthony Weiner has joined the race. It will be interesting to see what unfolds in the next few months. I have not decide who I will vote for in the primaries yet.

Danie
Upper East Side

Anthony D. Weiner is precisely like Kermit D. Frog; when it comes to Miss Piggy, can he behave himself??

Anthony Weiner for mayor sounds like a better idea. The other people seems lacking in ideas and life. As for Quinn, I'm not voting for Bloomberg's twin?

Mike
Morningside Heights

Mr. Wiener should be given a second chance. My question is does he have plans of betterment for the Library systems in New York by restoring some of the funds that Bloomberg cut.

Harriet

This was a personal scandal, not a public scandal. He didn't betray the public. We should judge him just on his plans for the city, not where he sent his nude pix. Who are we do judge that?

Scott
Chelsea

Why is anyone even talking about Anthony Weiner when Bill de Blasio, a truly progressive voice, is in the race? We don't have to vote for damaged goods just to have a mayor w a progressive approach, we can have de Blasio and besides his back story is far more interesting.

Sandra

If Anthony Weiner will get rid of the bike lanes, the bike program, and Janet Sadik-Khan, he's got my vote.

Michael
East Village

He didn't just have an affair like Clinton, which would make him human, but he showed horrendously poor judgment by broadcasting his privates on the internet. That kind of behavior is compulsive and perverted and I wouldn't trust his judgment as mayor.

Meryl
Manhattan

Weiner's lewdness does not disturb me as much as his ability to lie!
Weiner is one of the biggest disappointments in NYC political history.
I have never personally been so disappointed in a candidate!
I think his bid for major is another example of his egotism.
Finally, he is completing delusional if he thinks he is representing the "middle class" in NYC.

Adrienne
Jackson Heights

Anthony Weiner is a stand up, respectful kind of guy! He has done an outstanding job on behalf of New Yorkers especially to get the 9/11 bill passed! His wife has given him another chance so why not NYers? We have Bloomberg 3 chances...

Victor
Prospect Heights

I would like to hear the candidates address the city's ill-advised and dangerous plans to build a marine transfer station (aka garbage dump) on 91 St and the East River, smack in the middle of a residential area where children play, seniors live, and where there is public housing.

Jennifer

What does his sexting have to do with his abilities?

So he did something weird with his sex-life. Why does that mean he can't govern?

Is everyone's holier than thou sex-life impugnable and pure?

Gimme a break.

Let's judge him on his ideas, his execution, his record as an administrator and his abilities.

Was he corrupt?

No, he made a stupid mistake, even a few times - so what!

Seriously, i dont know how people can seriously consider these other idiots. Quinn's violated the city's rights. Liu is a criminal. The rest are unelectable. Weiner is the obvious choice.

William

Anthony Weiner is a proven sexual defiant . He needs to be registered as sex offender. He needs psychiatric care and not be running for public office.
