The New Jersey Devils are going to the Stanley Cup Finals after defeating the Rangers 3-2 in overtime of Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Adam Henrique scored the game winner at the 1:03 mark of overtime.
The Devils led 2-0 after the first period on the strength of goals from Ryan Carter and Ilya Kovalchuk.
The Rangers tied the game in the second period on goals from Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan.
Neither team scored in the third period.
Despite a successful season that saw the Rangers finish atop the Eastern Conference in the regular season and reach the Eastern Conference Finals, the team was not satisfied with the end result.
"Everyone in here wants to win so bad," captain Ryan Callahan said. "We battle all year, we have a good year, we fight back in this game, have some good chances in the third, force overtime and just like that, you're done."
"We put in a lot of work to get here, and obviously we wanted to get further," said goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. "But we played a good team."
"We got into the third round," said head coach John Tortorella. "That isn't good enough. We still have to find a way to win another round and get there. We have to change our mindset to continue trying to be the best."
The Devils will play in their first Stanley Cup final since 2003, when they defeated the Anaheim Ducks (then known as the Mighty Ducks) in seven games.
They will face the Los Angeles Kings, who defeated the Phoenix Coyotes in the Western Conference Finals four games to one.
Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals is Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
