After leading the team to its first playoff victory in 11 years, Mike Woodson is now officially head coach of the New York Knicks.

The Knicks announced announced Friday they had agreed to a multi-year contract extension, with general manager Glen Grunwald saying Woodson "has the respect of every person in this organization."

Woodson was named interim coach after Mike D'Antoni left in March.

The Knicks went 18-6 under Woodson, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Miami Heat four games to one.

Woodson says he expects the team to do better next season.

"It's going to take a total team effort," he said. I know expectations are high and they should be high. And I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
