The Devils took an early 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game on goals from Stephen Gionta, Patrik Elias and Travis Zajac.

The Rangers were able to erase that 3-0 deficit. They got a late first-period goal from Brandon Prust to make it 3-1. An early second-period goal from Ryan Callahan cut the deficit to one. Marian Gaborik tied the game for the Rangers just 17 seconds into the third period.

After Carter gave the Devils the lead with 4:24 remaining in the third period, Devils captain Zach Parise added an empty-netter for the 5-3 final.

The Rangers are now 1-2 in Game 5s this postseason. They lost to the Ottawa Senators in Game 5 in the first round and beat the Washington Capitals in Game 5 in the second round.

The Rangers also trailed the Devils 3-2 in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals before winning Games 6 and 7 en route to winning the Stanley Cup.

The two teams will head across the Hudson to the Prudential Center on Friday where the Devils will have a chance to clinch a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Los Angeles Kings.

The puck drops on Friday at 8 p.m.

If the Rangers win Game 6, Game 7 will be at the Garden on Sunday at 8 p.m.
