2011 Brooklyn Year In Review: Communities Endure Kletzky Murder, Weiner Scandal

NY1 continues its 2011 retrospective with a look at Brooklyn, which was hit hard by a high-profile child murder case, the Anthony Weiner scandal, and Hurricane Irene but nonetheless saw new life on Coney Island and beyond. NY1’s Jeanine Ramirez filed the following report.Brooklynites start the year still digging out and lashing out after the city's poor cleanup of the 2010 blizzard. They testify at City Council hearings to share their stories of being stranded on snowy streets. Mother Nature strikes again in August with a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook nerves and Hurricane Irene that barreled up the East Coast.
Brooklyn remains the most populous borough, but officials dispute the results of the 2010 census. The Census Bureau says there are 2.5 million residents, but officials claim the borough was undercounted and they're challenging the numbers.
"There's no question that we were robbed," says Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
Thousands turn out to Borough Park to pay their respects to eight-year-old Leiby Kletzky, who was kidnapped while walking home from day camp. He was later found dismembered. Levi Aron was charged with murder. Police say they discovered bloody knives and human remains stored in Aron's refrigerator.
Female residents are concerned for their safety after a series of sexual assaults taking place on streets and around subway stations.
Police investigate several hate crimes in the borough, including one where cars were burned in Midwood with anti-Semitic graffiti scrawled nearby.
Some police officers are now the ones being investigated after racist comments about the West Indian Day Parade are posted online. Officers are also criticized for handcuffing and detaining Councilman Jumanne Williams at the parade.
Brookynites in the 9th Congressional district witness their congressman's fall from grace as longtime incumbent Anthony Weiner resigns. The Democrat gets caught in a scandal involving lewd photos he sent to women through social media.
Coney Island has its highest attendance since 1964. Its Seaside Summer Concert series moves to a new spot after a lawsuit forced it out of Asser Levey Park. Jay-Z announces he's the opening act when the Barclays Center is ready next year. And Brooklyn holds its first ever marathon with a race in Prospect Park.
