Former U.S. Attorney Mark Cohen was selected by a federal to serve as an independent monitor to oversee the New York City Fire Department's recruitment and hiring efforts.

Last month, Judge Nicholas Garaufis decided the post was necessary to look out for what he called persistent discrimination in FDNY hiring practices.

Cohen was once a prosecutor for the Eastern District of New York.

The city law department says it does not object to Cohen's selection, but does not agree that any monitor is needed and plans to appeal that decision.
