Google is probably the undisputed king of Internet searches, and now it's no longer requiring users to just type what they are looking for. "Google Goggles" for Android phones allows users to snap pictures of pretty much anything -- logos, artwork, storefronts, books -- and then use sophisticated visual recognition algorithms to find search results.

The app is so sophisticated that users can snap words or characters in a foreign language, like in a menu or sign, and it will then translate whatever was shot into just about any language. That aspect may still need some work, however, because the station had trouble getting the app to read a basic Korean "stop" sign.

Right now, "Google Goggles" is an Android-only app that is free. Google has said it hopes to have it available on the iPhone in the near future.

"SnapShop Showroom" also uses the mobile device's camera, but in a slightly different way. Take a picture of a piece of furniture from a catalog -- beds, chairs, sofas, lamps, whatever -- and the item will pop up on the screen and can be overlayed virtually into wherever the user happens to be standing.

That way, users can see exactly what an item in a particular color will look like in a particular spot. Users can also pinch and stretch the image to make it "fit" properly and then snap a photo with the virtual object in a room, to can get opinions from a spouse or friend on how it looks.

"SnapShop Showroom" is an iPhone app that is a free download.
