Under the streets of the Main Stem, Broadway queen Patti LuPone is christening Midtown's new cabaret space, 54 Below. Billed as Broadway's newest nightclub, 54 Below is situated under Studio 54, the one-time disco hotspot that became a theater in 1998.

The club, which is a throwback to old school Manhattan supper clubs, provides a casual platform for some of Broadway's finest.

Tony Award-winning producer Tom Viertel is one of the many folks at the helm of this new space.

"We've worked with so many of the people that we've wanted to bring to the space and we really wanted to create a space for them that would be highly theatrical, but would be very comfortable," says Viertel.

Scott Wittman, the Tony Award-winning lyricist for "Hairspray," serves as creative consultant for the space. Wittman also collaborated with LuPone on her new solo act, "Far Away Places," which is currently being performed in the club.

"Patti and I have been doing shows together for a very long time," says Wittman. "The best part, I get to fly to South Carolina, we sit on the beach and talk about music and jokes and song and then it sort of pops out of the oven."

"It's great to be back in a club atmosphere the way I was in Les Mouches, where it was a destination," says LuPone. "You had to go to it, to a separate club, as opposed to.... I love Feinstein's and I love The Carlyle, they're in hotels though. This is a destination."

With 54 Below officially open, it's time to "come to the cabaret." Broadway artists expected to appear there later this summer include Andrea McArdle, Rebecca Luker, Brian d'Arcy James and Ben Vereen. For more information, visit 54below.com.
