There's a moment to get more families in the city to exercise together and the 14th Street Y has a new family fitness program to get the ball rolling. NY1's Cheryl Wills filed the following report. Fitness instructors at the 14th Street Y are trying to bring busy families together with a new program that helps everyone relax.
"It's fun, it doesn't have to be this foreign difficult big thing where you need a lot of props or equipment. You can just breathe and move your body together," says fitness instructor Julie Gayer Kris
The Yoga Family Fitness Intensive focuses on bonding. A familiar face on NY1, Entertainment Weekly contributing critic Owen Gleiberman, shows up at the class with his cute-as-a-button toddler, Lily.
"It's just really fun. You do it together. She taught the class a whole new move," says Gleiberman.
The folks running the program say it is a great way to move kids away from the television and get parents off their laptops and cellphones, so they can better relate to each other.
"The goal here is to create healthy habits and opportunities for families to create memories of being fit together," says 14th Street Y Executive Director Stephen Hazan Arnoff.
"It's really important because kids really learn from their parents and parents really learn from their kids," says 14th Street Y member Mara Wedeck.
Those involved with the program say this fitness initiative proves that "the family that lays together, stays together."
