The American Cancer Society is encouraging Asian New Yorkers to get screened for hepatitis B.
The American Medical Association says Asian and Pacific Islanders have the highest rates of the disease, which can lead to liver cancer if not treated.
As a result, the ACS is teaming up with the Salvation Army to offer free screenings.
Community leaders say early detection is important.
"Since with a hepatitis B carrier there's no symptoms, people who carry hepatitis B won't know that until they get a blood test, and when they have a symptom, they probably already have the late stage of the disease,” explained Ming-Der Chang of the ACS’ Asian Initiatives.
Free screenings will be on Thursday, August 19th at the Salvation Army Chinatown Community Center on the Bowery.
