Fashion Week kicks off September 6 with designers from across the city and around the globe converging at Lincoln Center and other locations around the city to present their looks for Spring 2013. NY1's Arts reporter Stephanie Simon filed the following report. Fashion Week is when designers showcase their collections for next season for buyers, magazine editors, bloggers, VIPs and celebs. It's a potent mix of style, celebrity and spin that just never seems to clash.
This year is no exception. Katie Holmes will show her Holmes & Yang Line. And adding one more to the growing ranks of celebrity designers, Jennifer Hudson has been named a guest designer for QVC.
Stylist George Brescia applauds celeb designers, especially from the music world.
"Because that's part of the reason we love them, because we love to see what they're wearing and how they're wearing it," says Brescia.
Perennial bad girl Betsy Johnson is promising a big surprise beyond her trademark cartwheel at her show/party.
Since most fashion fans will not be able to get tickets to the shows, they can enjoy Fashion's Night Out on September 6, with hundreds of fun fashion and beauty events around the city.
"It's to get people excited about the season, get them excited about clothes, get them exposed to what's happening in the stores and it just helps everybody," says Brescia.
At Rolando Santana's showroom, the designer is busy getting ready to show off his spring looks.
"You're on like 24/7 for six weeks, up until the show morning of or the day of the show," says Santana. "There's a lot of things happening like casting the models... doing fittings... making sure the shoes fit properly... having the girls walk, what looks go for which girl... hair and make-up tests.... You meet with the DJ and pick the music, pick the venue."
Santana says beyond the glamour and the craziness, Fashion Week is about business, and it's only a success if much of what is shown on the runway makes it to the stores and then your closet in the spring.
