Styling high fashion looks already on the racks, model mothers at the New York Public Library for Performing Arts at Lincoln Center participated in the first-ever New York Fashion Show designed just for them. NY1's Arts reporter Stephanie Simon filed the following report.Moms who want to be the bomb took advantage of a first at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. "Strut: The Fashionable Mom Show" let 20 real mothers stroll down the runway at Lincoln Center, showing off looks designed with a busy lifestyle in mind.
It was the brainchild of Melissa Gerstein and Denise Albert of the brand "The Moms."
"You need affordable and transformable looks that take you from drop off, to that meeting, back to school, back to the playground and even to a moms' night out," said Gerstein.
Supermodel Iman, who is also a mother, said she understands the challenge.
"Finding at the last minute something that you forgot, that you had a parents-teacher meeting, and you're wearing something that may be way too fashionable, and trying to cover it or keep your coat on while you're at the whole meeting," said Iman.
Most of us don't have the same problems as Iman, as far as being too dressed up when we go out. For the rest of us, it's usually about trying to add that razzle-dazzle.
"Black jeans, white tank top, black leather jacket or black blazer and wedge boots, wedge boots go a long way," said Albert.
As a working mom myself, I was a little bit skeptical, as these lovely ladies all had professional styling and primping. But that's the point of the show — admitting it's not easy, but still trying to look your best!
Just how real was the mom's runway show? When I checked in, they asked me if I was one of the models.
You might have to wait for next year to see that, but you don't have to wait until even the fall for these looks. These outfits by top designers are all in stores now.
After all, necessity may be the mother of all invention, but it doesn't mean moms can't indulge in a little luxury once in a while too.
