Valentine's Day has become a labor of love for the Brooklyn singer Xavier, who always seems to have a song in his heart. NY1's Arts reporter Stephanie Simon filed the following report. When it comes to Valentine's day, some people like chocolates. some people do roses. For singer Xavier, who spoke with NY1 in DUMBO, Brooklyn, he has always preferred a love song.
For the past eight years, Xavier has given his friends and fans a free song on Valentine's Day.
"In 2004, I decided to do a cover of 'In My Life' by the Beatles and send it out to my fans. And I got such a wonderful outpour of support and gratitude that I kept doing it every year since," says Xavier.
The inspiration for this year's song came in a dream, and the response has been a dream come true.
"I woke up one morning and I had the song 'Angel' stuck in my head," says Xavier. "So I tweeted Anita Baker, and I said, 'You know, I don’t know if I’m supposed to cover this song or wear tin foil on my head.' And she said, 'Why not both?'”
Born Xavier Smith, he studied and performed with the Boys Choir of Harlem and performed on stage with greats like Steve Wonder.
Yet while Xavier has crossed paths with many stars, his fans are the ones who led him to love his Valentine's Day project.
"It’s the one day that you can really say that, 'I love you,' I guess, to my fans, and have them really hear it," says Xavier.
Since it is for Valentine’s Day, I wasn’t shy to ask Xavier to give NY1 a little serenade.
If you want your own serenade, Xavier is performing a special Valentine's Day Eve "Ladies Of Soul Tribute" at Joe's Pub on February 13. And of course, you can get his musical valentine on his website, Twitter account or Facebook page.
