With polls showing he could be a strong contender, Donald Trump appears to be testing the waters for a possible 2012 presidential run.
The billionaire real estate mogul recently spoke with NY1's Errol Louis about the swirling political rumors.
He points out many polls show him leading the so-far quiet field of Republican candidates.
One of his main messages is that the United States is spending too much to keep troops all over the world.
And he says the middle class is under too much pressure, in part because banks aren't making loans to families who want to purchase homes.
"You always really have to think about the middle class," said Trump. "They put so much into this. They work their asses off, and honestly they fall behind, and it's very tough. You do have to worry about that, absolutely."
A Trump adviser traveled to Iowa earlier this week, meeting with leading GOP party officials and six other possible 2012 candidates.
Closer to home, Trump says he doesn't think the financially troubled New York Mets baseball team needs a financial savior, but that he would consider buying part of the team if the current owners, the Wilpon family, asked for his help.
Trump also said he wants to get in on the "Tavern on the Green" restaurant in Central Park, which closed last year and remains out of commission.
“The fact is I know everything about 'Tavern on the Green,;" said Trump. "What’s going on now is no good. So, I made a deal with the union, the union's all set. They really want to do it, and now it’s up to a very great Mayor Michael Bloomberg and whatever he says is fine. But I absolutely think it’s the absolute best thing to do for the city. Everybody wants it. You know I walk down the street and people and I have everybody saying either: 'Run for president' or 'Please open Tavern on the Green.' They don’t mention the Mets, which is interesting.”
Trump says he'll make a decision on a possible presidential run in June, when his show "Celebrity Apprentice" concludes.
