In her biggest shakeup since becoming the city's schools chancellor, Carmen Fariña reportedly has pushed out nearly 40 percent of the school system's superintendents.

The Daily News says Fariña replaced 15 of the city's 42 superintendents as part of a plan to fix failing schools.

In July, Fariña told the superintendents they would all have to reapply for their positions, and only 27 of them were kept.

Fariña says it's the first time the city has ever had an entire group of senior school officials reapply for their jobs.

The superintendents will be required to visit schools and check to see how well teachers and principals are doing.

They will then identify any problems and report back to the chancellor.
