The New York City Police Department is still investigating Thursday's hatchet attack on a group of police officers that injured two of them, one critically.

Sources have identified the hatchet-wielding man as 32-year-old Zale Thompson.

Investigators say four officers were posing together for a photo on Jamaica Avenue on Thursday when Thompson suddenly attacked them for no apparent reason.

Officer Joseph Meeker, 24, was hit in the arm and Officer Kenneth Healey, 25, was struck in the head before Thompson was stopped by the other two officers.

"As he continued his assault, the remaining two officers then fired multiple times on the armed suspect, who fell to the ground, dropping the hatchet. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene," said Police Commissioner William Bratton.

"They responded in a way that really shows the power of not only their abilities and their commitment, but their training. They responded exactly as their training dictated," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Officer Meeker remains in critical condition at Jamaica Hospital.

A 29-year-old woman who was standing nearby was struck in the back by a police bullet and is expected to fully recover.

The motive for Thompson's attack is unclear.

Commissioner Bratton says a possible terror connection has not been ruled out.

He also cited Wednesday's shooting at Canada's Parliament building as a cause for concern.
