With less than a month to go until a potential Long Island Rail Road strike, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is preparing contingency plans.

They include carpool lots, shuttle buses to select subway stations and extra HOV lanes on the Long Island Expressway.

The MTA said the effects of a strike wouldn't just be felt by people who use the railroad, as they expect bigger crowds on city subways and buses as Long Islanders try to find alternative routes to work.

Adam Lisberg, a spokesman for the agency, said it's preparing for the worst.

"We're being very frank. Nothing can accommodate them all. That's why there is a Long Island Rail Road," Lisberg said. "Long Island would not be what it is without the LIRR, and nothing can replace it as a metaphor, nothing can replace it in practice."

The MTA and its unions are expected to return to the negotiating table on Friday.

The railroad's unions can legally go on strike on July 20.
