Police in Brooklyn are investigating after a mother and her 11-day-old infant were found dead Thursday morning in what appears to have been a freak accident. NY1's Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.

Grief overcame loved ones gathered outside Marjorie Lyons' Brownsville apartment building Thursday.

Lyons and her infant son, Preston Warren Alexander, were found dead in their apartment Thursday morning.

"I'm just in an unbelieve mood. I'm just numb," said Douglas Lyons, Marjorie Lyons' father and Alexander's grandfather. "If I can just wake up from this dream, then I'd be alright."

Lyons said that the first indication something was wrong at 50 Legion Street came from his twin grandchildren. The 6-year-old girls woke up their uncle.

"He ran upstairs to find out, 'Why are you not taking the kids to school?' and he realized that the baby's leg was sticking out from under her, and that's what made him think that something is wrong, so he rolled her over off the baby, the 10-day-old baby, and then he realized that she was cold and the baby was turning purple," Lyons said.

He ran outside to get help. Emergency workers say the 34-year-old was dead. Hospital doctors say they couldn't save Preston, either. He was not yet 2 weeks old.

Family members say that Wednesday night, Margarine took either oxycodone or oxycontin that was prescribed to her for pain associated with her C-section, but they say it made her very tired.

At this point, police do not suspect criminal behavior, but the medical examiner'soffice still needs to determine the causes of death. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
